Book Covers: Judge by? Yay or Nay? πŸ€“

Hello my lovely friends πŸ’•

When you go to your favorite bookstore…how do you decide what goes home with you? What attracts you to a particular book? Is it the color? Artwork? Subject matter?

Or do you rely solely on the recommendations of friends/blogs/social media?

Since I don’t read “Bookclub Recommendations” πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ or books everyone is talking about, I do go by beautiful spines/covers, followed by intriguing titles.

Today I wanna show you some of the pretty ones on my bookshelf.

1. the beach street knitting society and yarn club

You can see why I picked that one up 😊 and it didn’t disappoint. It’s a wonderful story about motherhood, starting over, and friendship.

2. Music Of The Spheres is a historical novel set in the London of 1795. The war, espionage, murder, family bonds – this debut novel has it all. It’s a fascinating story, that has been described as ‘unputdownable’ πŸ™‚

3. The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane

I admit, I have not read this book yet. Reading about injustice – that is (for me) not the easiest task. And since this book is about the Salem witches and the trials…well, you can see the dilemma. πŸ˜• But I will get to it eventually, as I find the subject very intriguing, and fascinating.

4. The Painted Bridge

This is not an easy read – it’s a historical novel about a victorian lady, Anna, brought to an asylum by her new husband…he sounds like a peach, doesn’t he? 🀨

Anna tries to prove her sanity, but no one is willing to listen. It’s a story about betrayal, but also takes a look at the startling history of the psychiatric field, the treatment of women.

5. An Enigmatic Disappearance

The “Inspector Alvarez Mysteries” are smartly plotted, set in front of the beautiful scenery of Mallorca, and very enjoyable ‘who-dunnits’ πŸ€“

6. The Thirteenth Tale

This book is from my ‘to-be-read’ pile. The cover is one of the most beautiful ones on my shelf 😍 That cover, and the reviews that claim ‘Lovers of books about book lovers will be enthralled’ (Booklist) and ‘A first rate mystery that lovingly invokes both Jane Eyre and Rebecca’ (Entertainment Weekly) had me convinced that this tale has to come home with me. 😌

7. Winter Street

It’s a beautiful cover, but the story failed to hold my attention. I have to say though, that I started it halfway into the recent Virus-crisis, when I had a lot of trouble concentrating on anything. So I will give it another try, because it does sound like it would be a charming read. πŸ™‚

8. New Chronicles of Rebecca

The sequel to “Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm” was published in 1907. 😍

While the cover is most beautiful, what I find truly wonderful is the inscription πŸ₯°

Now I wonder if the ‘artwork’ in the back of the book was drawn by Gladys’ and Joe’s offspring 😊

9. The House at the Edge of Night

A tale about four generations of a family on a beautiful island off the coast of Italy, The House at the Edge of Night’ will draw you in, and you will love the visit. Spanning nearly a century this enchanting story follows the life of the Esposito family, will take you to the island, to the bougainvillea draped cafe that’s the center of the island life – The House at the Edge of Night’.

10. “Pucki” Series

These wonderful, treasured books have been in my family since they were published in the mid-to-late 1930s. They follow a girl, ‘Pucki’, through her life, from toddler, through the school years, university, marriage, motherhood, to her ‘golden years’, where she becomes a Grandmother. 😊 They are beautifully written young adult novels, that I read many, many times. πŸ₯°

I hope you enjoyed this peek at my bookshelf. πŸ€“

Don’t forget to let me know what makes you wanna buy a book! 😏

I’m looking forward to hearing from you! πŸ’•

Bookish Hodgepodge πŸ“š

Hello my lovely friends πŸ’•

Wanna talk books? I’m here for ya! 😊

I’m having reading time aplenty, and would love to share my findings and thoughts with you. And I would love to hear what you have to say!

1. Do you know the ‘Royal Spyness’ series by Rhys Bowen?
The narrative is Lady Georgiana, 35th in line to the throne of England. That’s quite far removed, so her life in the late 1920s/early 1930s isn’t always easy. But she manages quite well. These books are very entertaining, while giving us a glimpse into the past.

One of my, if not the favorite comeback line, is from the book ‘Love and Death Among the Cheetahs’. It tells the story of Georgiana and Darcy’s honeymoon in Kenia. After stumbling across a murder victim, they are being interrogated by the police, and the following exchange occurs…

2. If you’re following me on Instagram you already know that I’m alphabetizing my library. In the process, I’m showing off some read-worthy books (alphabetized by author). I’m only on Day 4 – but this is what I have so far…

A is for Atherton (Nancy) – Author of the ‘Aunt Dimity Series’

B is for Bowen (Rhys) – You read about her above

C is for Cannell (Dorothy) – Author of the ‘Ellie Haskell Mysteries’, and numerous other      bestsellers

is for Davis (Fiona) – Author of  ‘The Masterpiece’, ‘The Dollhouse’, ‘The Chelsea Girls’, to name just a few. All these books are historicalnovels, set in iconic New York City buildings. Fiona Davis melds real life NY with fictional characters in a masterful way.

3. Show-and-Tell

Back in the good old days, aka the shopping days  πŸ˜, I came across this magnificent copy of ‘Grimm’s FairyTales’. Printed in 1945, with wonderful illustrations it’s the latest addition to my antique book collection.

 4. Coloring Page ~ Title: So many books, so little time πŸ€“

I’ve also been drawing again…here is my latest piece.
I plan to fill in the ‘spines’ with the names of my favorite books.

Here it is all plain, waiting for you and your pencils! πŸ˜ƒ

That’s all for today. Thank you so much for reading!

Take good care of yourself  πŸ’• Be safe & stay healthy!
