A New (Creative) Path

Hello my lovely friends   πŸ’•   How sweet of you to peek in!

It’s been quite a while since I wrote to you last   😟   Let me tell you the reason why.
I had a little ‘soul-searching’ to do. If you remember, last time I told about my studio makeover, which also included de-stashing my jewelry making supplies. For years jewelry making excited me, made me happy. Well, that kinda stopped a few months back….and de-stashing only confirmed that nagging feeling that I was at the end of that path. I wasn’t inspired by my beads, the spark of excitement thinking of the possibilities was gone. I knew I have to change directions. But – where to? For a (long) while I felt kinda lost in the creative jungle. So many things to explore, so many pretty things to make – but nothing really grabbed me like the jewelry making did in the beginning.
Then it happened. During the clean-up/reorganizing/make-over of my studio I unearthed a basket full of yarn. I used to knit and crochet quite a lot many, many moons ago. But, even though I didn’t do a lot of needlework anymore, pretty, gorgeous yarn kept catching my attention, had to come home with me….hence the stash.
While fingering the yarn, sorting through the crochet hooks, and knitting needles, the spark of excitement was back!   πŸ˜ƒ  The seed was planted…crocheting, knitting – maybe even take it one step further and design a few fun pieces.
Then a few things happened
~ a friend of mine introduced me to ‘Ravelry’ -oh my…that site is a paradise for yarn-, crochet-, and knitting enthusiasts!
~browsing in the library I found a new book series* (in the cozy mystery section – my second home   😍) and the heroine is a crochet-designer    πŸ˜³    Wait? What? Pretty awesome, right?!
~while digging in the hall-closet for a jacket I remembered having, but hadn’t seen all winter, I found a box with scarves and hats I made over the years. And I remembered the satisfaction of finishing a piece of wearable ‘anything’ with just a hook or needles and a ball of yarn.

So here I was, watching these puzzle pieces come together – and who am I to question the signs from the universe! Right? 😊

So…besides composing this post in my mind, somewhat committing to this new path, I started down the new road by sketching ideas, crocheting some test pieces, and brainstorming with the help of a fiber artist/friend.

Here is what I have so far…

1. A crochet cardi – Granny Squares and double/triple crochet

img_1627

The yarn for the Granny Squares I found in my stash – the matching colors I found in a wonderful local yarn store.

2. This is more of a recycle, upcycle, ‘make wearable’     project.
Last weekend I found this cardigan in a Thrift Store. It’s a bit scary…take a look

Yikes! Right?    Very ’80s, Bill Cosby Show.
I do love a lot about this – the patterns, the colors, the material (100% fine cotton), the fact that it’s made in Australia – I can’t make friends with the idea that it’s supposed to be worn as is.
I sat down with my friend, the fiber artist and also the owner of the above-mentioned yarn store, and brainstormed. We came up with the idea of making it a shawl or a poncho…tone it down by removing the sleeves and maybe the border. I took it home, and gave it even more thought. Here’s what I came up with

I think without the sleeves and border and the side insert in crochet mesh, it might actually be wearable. We’ll see.

Are you still here? Thank you for that! πŸ€—

I actually have one more piece, but I’ve taken up enough of your time for one night, so I’ll save that one for tomorrow. 😌

*Oh, one more thing ….if you’re interested in the book series I mentioned- it’s called ‘Annie’s Mysteries Unraveled’. The series is about one lady, the crochet designer, but each book is written by a different writer. I’ve read three books so far and am not disappointed.

This is the first one in the series

I’m looking forward to sharing this new path with you. Let’s have fun on this journey into the needlework-world! I’ll do my best to make it entertaining.

I hope you join me next time πŸ’•

Until then

~Tina xoxo

A few things that happened this week πŸ˜Ž

Hello my lovely friends πŸ’• How sweet of you to peek in!

How’s everything in your little corner of the world? All is good over here. It’s April in Kansas…that means a lot of rain β˜”οΈ Yesterday we had a little lake forming in the back yard. For about an hour we were ‘Beachpeople’ 😁 It also means that the poor dogs are missing out on their walks….but they’re still tired! πŸ˜† Here’s Lorelai in her favorite chair 😍

I had to keep really busy, or I would have joined her 😝

~1. So I gave my studio a (much needed) make-over/clean-up/destashing!

I only have one before picture….and that’s enough for you to get an idea why I said ‘much needed’ πŸ˜‹ It’s from my sewing table turned catch all for fabric, works in progress, books, yarn etc. Well, brace yourself…..here it is

   EEEEEK! Right? 😱
Well, it’s much better now! See…

Hard to believe it’s the same corner, huh? 😁
I also cleaned up my other work table – the one I used mainly for my jewelry. After a lot of destashing, trashbag filling, and rearranging, the rest of the room looks like this…

 My work table

I did paint the frame (used to be gold-ish), and the little bookshelf, well the box said ‘Microwave Cart’ if I remember correctly…it is quite a few years old πŸ˜‰(used to be fake-oak laminate). I can really recommend painting old, outdated pieces. Just slap some chalk paint on it, sand in places, wax it- done! It’s really quite simple, and the transformation is amazing!

~2. Now I had room to do something creative – I needed more felted pins for the store….so that’s what was Number one on the to-do list. See, experience has shown, that when my workspace is too organized I can’t create. So I make a list of a few things that need to be done. 😊 If you wanna see how to make these pins….look no further! There’s a post for that πŸ˜€

~3. Hubby and I celebrated our anniversary last week. And because he’s a pretty great guy I baked him his favorite cookies. It’s a german cookie called ‘Nussecken’, Nutty Corners- and they’re absolutely fabulous! If you wanna make some, I translated the recipe for you. 😍

~4. Yesterday started a new ‘100 Day Project’ on Instagram @elleluna. I hope to make it all the way through…last year I gave up after 2, 3 weeks πŸ˜• I had gotten a bit too ambitious, and chose ‘100 Days of Fashion’ drawn in colored pencil. Being new to drawing, and the fact that the models had to have great hair – and arms and legs for that matter 😝- I fell behind over one weekend, never got caught up, and eventually gave up. Here are some pictures from last year…

This year’s theme – for me….you can pick whatever theme, medium you like- is ‘100 Days of Folk Art’. I love Folk Art, ever since I discovered ‘Karen Gerard’s’ paintings on Pinterest. My creative mind kicked in….I got out my oil- and acrylic paints, and started painting. Ha– that did not work out well! πŸ˜† After a few days of working on this I had to admit that it looks more like a Kindergarten project than anything I had intended. Wanna see? Okay….here it is πŸ™‡πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

See what I mean? 😏 I didn’t wanna give up completely, so, for the challenge, I switched to colored pencils. That seems to be working out a little bit better! Have a look…

There is definitely room for improvement, but I do have 100..well now 98..days to get better. 😎

~5. As you probably gathered from my talking about ‘destashing’, I’m on the brink of giving up jewelry making, and trying something else. I’ve been mulling this over in my mind for quite some time now, and I do believe I’m finally on to something! πŸ˜€ No, not painting! That might be a bit delusional. πŸ˜‚ Let me think on it a bit longer….when I have a solid plan you’ll be the first to know! 😍

Alrighty, that’s it for now. Thank you soooo much for sticking with me through my musings! πŸ’œ

Oooohhhhh – one more thing. I’ll finally get to see ‘Garth Brooks’ in concert! Eeeeeeekkkk! That has been a dream of mine ever since the days of  our ‘Friends in low places’ 🀠

So….Now I’m really done!

I hope to see you soon! πŸ’•

Until then

What’s in a word? ~ Dictionary Day πŸ“š

Hello my lovely friends πŸ’• How nice of you to peek in!

It’s another Dictionary Day! Let’s take a word and see what all is ‘in it’. Here we go…

Today’s word is

🏺 Amphora 🏺

~1. Here’s what the dictionary has to say

~2. Wikipedia knows a few more details

~3. It’s various purposes were

a.) serving jar for wine and oil

b.) a liquid measure in the ancient world- Greece = 9 gallons; Rome = 6 gallons, 7 pints

c.) when set on a foot, as a commemorative vase awarded the victors in contests

~4. Eric Rhodes mentioned one in this beautiful poem

Resting
in the crisp autumn
air of humanity,
my heart sings
like a lark in the morning’s light.
Ageless,
my soul longs
for your presence, my love,
and in a world
separate from mine
I would embrace you,
like the sea
around the shore.
Fulfilled,
I am invigorated
amid the heavenly bodies
which allow for such
a perfect union.
Overflowing
with love,
I pour like wine
from this amphora,
shaped by the great potter,
into the still lake
of serenity
in which you swim.

(2009)
Eric Rhodes

~5. An amphora is mentioned in a few songs

– ‘Aquarium Lyrics’ by Misanthrope

– ‘Elysium (Eternity is Nigh) by Incantation

– ‘John has a good Heart, but…’ by Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso

~6. I think Amphoras male a beautiful ornamental decor in any style home 😊

I love the one with the owls! 😍 Which one is your favorite?

Well, I do believe that’s all for now. I truly had fun researching for- and telling you everything I found out about these beauties. I hope you enjoyed it too! 😊

See you soon πŸ’•

What’s in a word? ~ Dictionary Day

Hello my lovely friends 💕Thanks for peeking in! 🤗

It’s Dictionary Day! Let’s take a word, and see what all is ‘in it’ . Shall we? Let’s shall! 😋

Today’s word is

                                                                                                            ‘Abode‘ 🏡🏕🏰

~1. Here’s what the dictionary has to say

~2. Wikipedia knows where it’s from

~3. The Thesaurus knows what else to call it

Address, base, casa, crash pad 😅, dwelling, homestead, house….. to name a few.

~4. Kabir wrote a beautiful poem about the

Adobe of the beloved

Oh Companion That Abode Is Unmatched,
Where My Complete Beloved Is.

In that Place There Is No Happiness or Unhappiness,
No Truth or Untruth
Neither Sin Nor Virtue.
There Is No Day or Night, No Moon or Sun,
There Is Radiance Without Light.

There Is No Knowledge or Meditation
No Repetition of Mantra or Austerities,
Neither Speech Coming From Vedas or Books.
Doing, Not-Doing, Holding, Leaving
All These Are All Lost Too In This Place.

No Home, No Homeless, Neither Outside or Inside,
Micro and Macrocosm Are Non-Existent.
Five Elemental Constituents and the Trinity Are Both Not There
Witnessing Un-struck Shabad Sound is Also Not There.

No Root or Flower, Neither Branch or Seed,
Without a Tree Fruits are Adorning,
Primordial Om Sound, Breath-Synchronized Soham,
This and That – All Are Absent, The Breath Too Unknown

Where the Beloved Is There is Utterly Nothing
Says Kabir I Have Come To Realize.
Whoever Sees My Indicative Sign
Will Accomplish the Goal of Liberation.

~5. Quite a few artists wrote (and sang) about an abode

      -1. Humble Abode by Abramelin
-2.
Enigma of Abode by Disperse (Album ‘Seasons of Mist’)
-3.
Lights Abode/Celestial Salem by Ely Cathedral Choir
-4.
Avalon, The King’s Abode by Avalanch (Album ‘Eternal Flame’)

~6. In Stockholm, Wisconsin is the ‘Abode Gallery’ with a great variety of artist’s creations.

~7. A vast number of artists portray their Abode in their art- with oil, acrylic, pens, pencils, ink…

….and then there is my latest ‘Art Love’ ~ Folk Art. I adore the whimsical depictions of everyday scenes, and Karla Gerard is my favorite right now. (Thank you Pinterest 😁) But don’t take my word for it, see for yourself

And? What do you think? Adorable, right? 😍

Well, I do believe that’s all. I truly had fun researching for- and writing this. I do hope you enjoyed it too! πŸ™‚

See you soon! 💕

Until then

What’s in a word? ~ Dictionary Day

Welcome to the very first ‘Dictionary Day’ πŸ€—

Honestly, I can’t tell you where this idea came from. A few days ago, I, all of a sudden, had the image of my beautiful dictionary in my mind, and the thought of taking a word and seeing what all is ‘in it’.

This is my dictionary…pretty, isn’t it?

image

Looking at it, I always have to think of ‘Hawkeye’ Pierce from M*A*S*H. He was being interviewed by a stateside reporter visiting Korea. The reporter asked him which books he brought to Korea….Hawkeye’s answer was “Just the dictionary. I figure it has all other books in it” πŸ€“

Alright then, let’s see ~ today’s word is

                                                                          ABALONE

~1. Here’s what the dictionary has to say about it

image

Wikipedia says – ‘any of a group of small to very large sea snails, marine gastropod Mollusks in the family Haliotidae’. Other common names are ear shells, sea ears, and muttonfish.
Abalone is used for food, the shell for ornaments, and is a source of ‘Mother-of-
Pearl’.

~2. Pictures!

The shells….

Here’s one in a tank …

image

~3.  Viral Bhanshaly wrote a poem about the Abalone

Abalone Shell
As the Abalone Shell was found,
All the architects’ gathered round,
Gazing at the piece of art,
Made by a creature, so serene and smart.

Its natural beauty made no noise,
For all the architects’, were there and poised,
Staring, at this new found wonder,
Slowly, they started to plunder…

What made such a beautiful work?
Why is it making, our minds go berserk?
What produced the velvety curl?
What in such nature produced this twirl?

And so they held it in their hands,
As the first tears, came down in bands,
The golden, bluely, greenly shades,
Bold still, over many decades.

With the patterned indents still there,
Their hearts clear of all despair,
They carried on still surprised,
Until they slowly realised.

The little mark, precise and secure,
As it acted like a little lure,
For in the middle a little eye,
Pointing to, the Heavens and sky.

With all the shininess, that it brought,
The Abalone Shell purely sought,
Out of all its twists and bends,
That before it had, many friends.

And ten indents it carried inside,
These may be friends, or rules to abide,
And in the gold, it may be so true,
That it lived with its friends, like a fine crew.

The bluely-green may signify sea,
Also the Abalone was fine, well and free,
But in all of this, the thing that was best,
Was inside the eye, a red golden crest.

This was the heart, serene, filled with grace,
It pumped the, unique creature, at a good pace,
And as a good present, it then left behind,
The Abalone Shell, which we, today find.

The heart may be gone, taken up above,
Up to the skies, with the white dove,
But, we keep, the blue, green and golden,
Abalone Shell, however much, past olden.

We now today, remember this deed,
The Abalone Shell, which we also freed,
Nobody knows, where those men went,
But with them, discovery, whether given or meant…

Viraj Bhanshaly

~4. And  it’s also mentioned in song lyrics

~ Top of the hill by Tom Waits

~ My Belly by Aesop Rock

~ Thanks To The Rolling Sea by Elvis Presley…..hehe- πŸ•Ί- this is the emoji you get when you type ‘Elvis’! πŸ˜„ Sorry- I had to share.

~5. Do you know the game ‘Abalone’? I’m not sure what that has to do with things…yet, there it is. πŸ€” Maybe the original game idea is older, and it used to be played with shells? What do you think? Any idea?

~6. There’s also a wine grape called Abalone. It’s widely known as ‘Chasselas blanc’ grown in Switzerland, France, Germany, Portugal, Hungary, Romania, and New Zealand. Wow….it’s seems that’s a very popular grape. 😁

Well, I do believe that’s all. I had fun researching for- and writing this. I hope you enjoyed reading it. 😊

See you soon! πŸ’•

Until then

Create an ‘Artsy Day Planner’ ~ UpdateΒ

Hello my lovely friends πŸ™‹πŸ» Thanks so much for peeking in. 😍

Remember I started creating my own day planner? Well, it’s been a while, but it’s finally finished … I guess I’ll have to start the next one in September πŸ˜‹

If you missed it…here’s the start of the project πŸ“

I finished the artwork for each month little by little…in the beginning I used oil paint- and would not recommend that. It takes a long time to dry, and makes the pages kinda heavy.

So….here are my calendar pages

As you can see, I went from oil painting to tangling (with gel pens), to colored pencils, and soft pastel chalk. Whatever strikes your fancy…there are no limits! Even a collection of your favorite quotes would be awesome. 😍

The one change I made from the original idea….I changed the cover art. Remember I painted an owl to grace the cover? Not so great…it does need a smooth cover. So I made a collage out of strips of scrapbook paper

That should work! 😁

I do hope I inspired you, and that we all start carrying our own, individual art around. Can’t wait to hear (and see) what you did! πŸ’•

See you soon πŸ’ƒπŸ»

Just a few things that happened this week…

Hello all 😎First I wanna brag a bit (even though I had nothing to do with it πŸ˜‹) The weather is amazing! Now keep in mind ~ I’m in Kansas, and it’s sometime in February…the 21st…it’s February 21,  yet currently 76 (!!!) degrees outside!

πŸ’«So, this morning I met up with a friend for our daily dog walk, and it was so truly gorgeous out there, that we decided to be ambitious and take this walking business one step further. But first we took the dogs home- they’re legs are short, and 2.5 miles is about all they can do. πŸ˜€ But Carole and I really did it. We walked another 4 miles! I admit, I’m a bit sore, but feel great! We walked a trail we had only heard of and talked about, and it was beautiful. Halfway through we came upon a patch of trees…

Look at these thorns 😳 They’re about 4″ long! We had no idea what kind of tree this is, so I researched it when I got home. It’s a ‘Honey Locust’ tree. They like to grow on moist riverbanks. Makes sense…..there is a little creek flowing nearby. Apparently in the summer and fall they look quite pretty. I’ll try to remember to take more photos then! 😁

That was today….the rest of this past week was just a little bit of this, and a little bit of that.

πŸ’«Last Monday I made my husband’s favorite…delicious ‘country style ribs’, cooked in beer…EEEK πŸ˜‹ No wonder they’re his favorite, right?!

*I’ll share the recipe this Friday

πŸ’«There’s news on the succulent front 😍 I’m propagating my ‘Echeveria minima’. Look at these roots and ‘babies’ appearing slowly

If you’d like to try this…here’s help πŸ˜Š

On Saturday was ‘National Wine Drinking’ Day ~ I don’t have footage of that 😝 but I found this poem…

Hehehe ….πŸ˜‚

πŸ’«Here is a  ‘work-in-progress’ currently on the table…

‘Cala Lilies’ – from sketch/drawing to oil painting…

Right now I’m filling in the background. Once it’s dry enough to hang, you’ll get to see the finished piece. 😍

πŸ’«Speaking of finished piece- here’s a wreath I made over the last week. A lot of tulle and denim, knotted, surrounding a ‘Live, Laugh, LπŸ’œve’ Weaving. What do you think? It’s quite unusual, huh? πŸ™ƒ

πŸ’«This lady moved to the store last weekend. I really enjoyed turning a boring (and a bit creepy 😬) white styrofoam head into sassy ‘Ms. Katherine’

πŸ’«A few days ago, on our way to the casino, I caught the last glimpse of the setting sun

It reminds me of one of the last scenes in one of my favorite movies/books- ‘Rebecca’, written by Daphne duMaurier, when the DeWinters leave London to go back to Manderley, and they see the fiery glow on the horizon. Thankfully here it really just is the setting sun. πŸŒ…

πŸ’« I came across this wonderful poem that really spoke to me. I hope you love it as much as I do, and make it your mantra πŸ’œ

πŸ’«And now ….because you’re so sweet to read all the way up to here πŸ’•a little sneak peek at my next post  ’10 easy Home Decor ideas’

So, these are a few things from my past week. I’d love it if you would share a story or picture from your life with me 😍

~ Tina xoxo πŸ’•
