Fighting Mosquitoes One Plant At A Time

Hello my lovely friends πŸ’• How sweet of you to peek in!

If you were with me last year you might remember this one. For all my new friends, here’s a ‘rerun’ πŸ™‚

Can you believe it’s almost May? That means it’s finally time to tend to the flowerbeds.
Right now I’m taking a break from weed-pulling Β ….ugh….all that rain and the humidity really made them flourish. πŸ˜– I do leave the pretty ones with the flowers, Β but sorry ‘Creeping Charlie’ you gotta go.

Then it’s off to buy the flowers! Yay! Do you get overwhelmed at the nursery/garden center? I sure do – my flowerbed is not all that big, so I can’t get that many, and I can never decide which ones of the pretties to take home.

But ~ this year it’s going to be easy! See, I’m very allergic to mosquito bites. Those little suckers leave me severely swollen and itchy. So I was very glad when I came across this nifty chart that lists all the plants mosquitoes hate! Ha! Got them now! 😜

I will plant them all around the patio, and in pots around and on the table. I do wish I could cover myself in all these plants…just to be on the safe side. That is of course not possible, but it gave me an idea for a fun sketch πŸ˜‹

Don’t you wish? Then all you need is have someone throw a net Β over you to keep the bees away! 🐝

I will plant everything this week…hopefully it’s successful.

(Update- last year we had a lot less mosquitoes, I’m hoping it was due to the plants , and we’ll be bite-free again this year! 😊

Going now to pull some more weeds! 😝

Oh, wait…..I just found this helpful hint

Best Plants for the Bathroom ~ from Kelley’s DIYΒ

Hello my lovely friends πŸ’•Thanks for peeking in! 😊

If you’re looking to turn your bathroom into a ‘Jungalicious paradise’ – Kelley has some wonderful tips and ideas for you!

Just a few things that happened this week…

Hello all 😎First I wanna brag a bit (even though I had nothing to do with it πŸ˜‹) The weather is amazing! Now keep in mind ~ I’m in Kansas, and it’s sometime in February…the 21st…it’s February 21,  yet currently 76 (!!!) degrees outside!

πŸ’«So, this morning I met up with a friend for our daily dog walk, and it was so truly gorgeous out there, that we decided to be ambitious and take this walking business one step further. But first we took the dogs home- they’re legs are short, and 2.5 miles is about all they can do. πŸ˜€ But Carole and I really did it. We walked another 4 miles! I admit, I’m a bit sore, but feel great! We walked a trail we had only heard of and talked about, and it was beautiful. Halfway through we came upon a patch of trees…

Look at these thorns 😳 They’re about 4″ long! We had no idea what kind of tree this is, so I researched it when I got home. It’s a ‘Honey Locust’ tree. They like to grow on moist riverbanks. Makes sense…..there is a little creek flowing nearby. Apparently in the summer and fall they look quite pretty. I’ll try to remember to take more photos then! 😁

That was today….the rest of this past week was just a little bit of this, and a little bit of that.

πŸ’«Last Monday I made my husband’s favorite…delicious ‘country style ribs’, cooked in beer…EEEK πŸ˜‹ No wonder they’re his favorite, right?!

*I’ll share the recipe this Friday

πŸ’«There’s news on the succulent front 😍 I’m propagating my ‘Echeveria minima’. Look at these roots and ‘babies’ appearing slowly

If you’d like to try this…here’s help πŸ˜Š

On Saturday was ‘National Wine Drinking’ Day ~ I don’t have footage of that 😝 but I found this poem…

Hehehe ….πŸ˜‚

πŸ’«Here is a  ‘work-in-progress’ currently on the table…

‘Cala Lilies’ – from sketch/drawing to oil painting…

Right now I’m filling in the background. Once it’s dry enough to hang, you’ll get to see the finished piece. 😍

πŸ’«Speaking of finished piece- here’s a wreath I made over the last week. A lot of tulle and denim, knotted, surrounding a ‘Live, Laugh, LπŸ’œve’ Weaving. What do you think? It’s quite unusual, huh? πŸ™ƒ

πŸ’«This lady moved to the store last weekend. I really enjoyed turning a boring (and a bit creepy 😬) white styrofoam head into sassy ‘Ms. Katherine’

πŸ’«A few days ago, on our way to the casino, I caught the last glimpse of the setting sun

It reminds me of one of the last scenes in one of my favorite movies/books- ‘Rebecca’, written by Daphne duMaurier, when the DeWinters leave London to go back to Manderley, and they see the fiery glow on the horizon. Thankfully here it really just is the setting sun. πŸŒ…

πŸ’« I came across this wonderful poem that really spoke to me. I hope you love it as much as I do, and make it your mantra πŸ’œ

πŸ’«And now ….because you’re so sweet to read all the way up to here πŸ’•a little sneak peek at my next post  ’10 easy Home Decor ideas’

So, these are a few things from my past week. I’d love it if you would share a story or picture from your life with me 😍

Dear (Project) Diary

….and all you lovely people out there πŸ’•

Lots of creative bustling going on around here. 😊 Almost too much – if there is such a thing. I say ‘almost too much’ because ~ as you probably know ~ if your brain is too busy planning things you get nothing done. πŸ™ƒ
So I decided to make a list of the projects I have on my mind…and by sharing them with you, commit to them, and maybe inspire you to create your own day planner/wallhanging/art and art display. πŸ€“

1️⃣ First I wanna update you on the day planner…if you missed it- here’s the beginning
Since that post went public I’ve made 2 more calendar pages -the other 8 are going onto the to-do list πŸ˜‹

2️⃣ Next on my list is a new ‘spring-y’ wallhanging 🌺
Remember theΒ felted one? This one is similar, except the background is not a piece of felted wool sweater. For this one I crocheted a rectangle with BouclΓ© yarn.
If you would like to make one, it’s really quite simple…
1. Crochet 28 chain stitches (that number is really up to you, it depends on the desired size of your piece… maybe you want to make a blanket 😊 it just has to be an even number)
2. Place a double-crochet stitch in the 3rd chain from the hook. *Chain 2, and place a double-crochet stitch in the 2nd chain stitch. Repeat from * until your piece is the desired size. Then pick your ‘wool fluff’ and start decorating! Have Fun! πŸ˜€
Here’s my ‘wip’…

img_1300
For a quick no-sew solution, simply clip some ‘CafΓ© Rod’ clips to the top and thread on a rod or a skinny branch (my favorite 😌)

3️⃣ Painting a frame is up next.
I’ve had this print in my store when it first opened, when it was ‘Beads for Belles’. Quite fitting, don’t you think? 😊

img_1293

Well, since then I changed the name to ‘Kristabella’, and also the decor and feel of the store. So, home with me it went. It really doesn’t go with anything here…what to do πŸ€”
A new print and some chalk paint! Got both – next thing on the to-do list 😏

img_1294

I will show you the result soon!

4️⃣ Then there is the stack of wool sweaters and pretty fabrics waiting to be turned into pretty pillows, arm warmers, and wall decor – next on the to-do list- man, that thing is growing fast πŸ˜† – so I can restock my somewhat depleted Etsy shop.

img_1302

5️⃣ Last, but not least…a finished project! My growing- quite literally πŸ˜‰- plant collection. As I mentioned before in Roommate: Mother Nature , I can finally buy and keep plants. Here’s the latest addition

It seems I can’t stop buying plants, cacti, succulents πŸ’•

Here I took some minis, and replanted them into these pretty pots

Behind the pink top you can see that I’m trying to propagate some succulents. I’ll keep you posted-if you never hear about it again, it didn’t work πŸ˜‚
I wanna say that’s it for now, but I’ll probably think of more projects you don’t wanna miss. πŸ€— So please look for the next entry in my ‘Project Diary’!
Until then

Take a rose and a potato ~ Part II

A little over 3 weeks ago I shared the beginning of this project with you.

Here’s a – for lack of a better word – an update. I wish I could present a beautiful plant…sadly that’s not the case. πŸ˜• It’s still just a stick in the mud.

There is some moss growing…

Yesterday I saw a few ants marching across the soil…I’m thinking they found the potato πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ – but that’s all there is to report.

I was curious if anyone ever had any success with this project, so I googled the video. Turns out I’m not the only one with very meager results (aside from the moss 😜). Most people got nothing, a few had potato plants growing (that would be awesome πŸ˜„), and one or two got a rose. I wonder if it depends on the ‘mother plant’?!

As soon as I see anything, potato, rose, ant colony- I’ll let you know! 😬 …and you please do the same! I’m curious to see if this worked for you! πŸ€—

’til next time πŸ’•

Take a rose and a potato…

Hello ~ today I’m sharing my latest gardening project with you. Well, the first step, the beginning.
You might have seen the videos on Facebook, where a very clever soul is growing a rose with the help of a potato. I’ve always wanted to try that, saved the post…only to forget about it.
Then,Β  yesterday the universe put everything together for me, and I started the “Potato Rose”.
First of all, my rosebush had finally recovered from this year’s invasion of the ‘Japanese Beetle’. Boy, those little suckers really did a job on my poor flowers. I tried all the natural ‘get rid of bugs’ remedies I know…nothing worked. So, in the end, I had to – much to my chagrin – use a chemical. Β πŸ˜• Β  Β  That worked though, and now the little pretty is blooming again.

20160808_163118.jpg

Second, the video popped up in my newsfeed again, and I had just bought potatoes.
So, what am I waiting for?
I clipped a rosebud with stem (about 10″)
20160808_163118-1.jpg

removed the flower and the leaves

20160808_164533-1.jpg

drilled a hole into the potato with a long, pointy screw

20160808_164440.jpg

pushed the stem in – that was easier than I thought. Potatoes are quite ‘flexible’

20160808_164619.jpg

planted everything in a medium size pot

20160808_165019.jpg

Then I cut the bottom of a plastic bottle, and fitted it over the stem.
If you’re trying this at home, push the bottle into the dirt about 1/2″ so the first breeze doesn’t make off with your greenhouse!
A little water all around the bottle – done!

20160809_092419-1.jpg

….and now we wait! 😊

I hope I’ll be able to show you results soon🌹If you don’t hear about this again, I’ve failed miserablyπŸ˜‹ That shouldn’t stop you from showing me your success though!!!
Good luck to you! πŸ€

~Tina xoxo
